Transitions Healthcare is a home healthcare company in Longmont, Colorado. The overall goal is to proactively address and redress the care errors caused by our fragmented healthcare system and to prevent the decline of a client’s condition before a 911 event occurs; one of the ways in which we accomplish this goal is through occupational therapy. We care for you and want to provide you with all the support you require to maintain a better and healthier lifestyle. This is why we have written down some information about the benefits of occupational therapy.

What is occupational therapy (OT)

Occupational therapy (OT) is a multidimensional, holistic, client-centered therapy that utilizes every day meaningful and functional activities to promote healing, recovery, and/or independence in order to allow people to participate to their fullest potential in necessary and desired activities. OT works with individuals in order to maximize their quality of life. Each client’s goals, abilities, motivations, limitations, and social/environmental/psychological/physical/medical status are unique; therefore, OT is client-centered and aims to promote each individual’s life to his/her/their fullest potential.

The focus of occupational therapy

The focus of occupational therapy in home healthcare generally includes ensuring that clients are safe in their homes and able to remain safely in their homes for as long as possible. OT in home healthcare may also work on maximizing an individual’s independence with daily care, including self-care and household management tasks, in order to decrease dependence on others. There are many benefits to OT, namely, decreased risk of hospitalizations or injury, decreased financial and/or caregiver burden, improved quality of life, self-concept, and personal pride.

Aspects to keep in mind

Make sure you are open and honest with your occupational therapist. Follow your occupational therapist’s recommendations or instructions as well and consistently as you can. Provide feedback to your occupational therapist after trying and implementing recommendations in order for your OT to make adjustments to your treatment plan or recommendations as appropriate.
